Electric charging: why the MID standard is essential

MID standard: what this means for you (and your charging stations)

The MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) standard guarantees the reliability of electricity measurements provided by charging stations.

It is a European directive that regulates energy meters when they are used for billing purposes. In other words, if you charge your users (employees, customers, visitors, etc.) for charging, your stations must be MID certified.

A standard that guarantees:
  • Accuracy of consumption data

  • Compliance with legislation

  • Fairness for your users

  • The kWh measured are accurate, recognised and legally enforceable.

  • To bill based on usage, your charging stations must be equipped with a MiD meter.

  • Each session is measured as accurately as possible, without approximation or arbitrary rounding.

MID, essential for all pay terminals

MID certification is not mandatory for a free charging station or one used internally (e.g. for a company fleet).

However, it is mandatory as soon as you charge a third party for charging, whether it is:

  • an employee reimbursed for use

  • a passing customer

  • or a tenant in a shared car park

Without this compliance, you expose yourself to legal risks and disputes with users.
